The role of zakat institutions in facing the threat of COVID-19 pandemic
Abstract
Since January 2020, the world has been attacked with the dangerous and highly infectious virus known as COVID-19. Ever since, many people from all across the world suffered from the impact of the pandemic, be it mentally, physically and financially. Zakat has always been a tool known for its characteristics to deal with poverty and help underprivileged people sustain life. Hence, as one of the primary instruments of Islamic social finance, zakat has come in handy to aid those who are impacted by the current situation. The primary purpose of this study is to conduct an analysis of the role and contributions of zakat institutions in supporting the government and community to face the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study also stipulated some fatwa (an official statement or order issued by an Islamic religious leader) issuance by the fatwa committee and muftis of different countries on the zakat assistance to those affected by COVID-19. The research was carried out using a qualitative method. The research approach used was a review of previous literature, the books, research, papers, science conference guidelines, fatwas, and news headlines, among other things, in order to gain insight into the role of zakat institutions. Finally, the research concludes that zakat institutions play a significant role in assisting society during the pandemic, based on MAIWP, BAZNAS and Muis s contributions made to those affected during the global pandemic.
