| dc.description.abstract | This paper seeks to examine the role of economic ideology on Islamic socialist movements by examining the economic policy and actions of the movement. We seek to determine whether socialist ideology deviates an Islamic movement away from its Islamic ideals. This paper uses Sarekat Islam (SI) as a case study and examines how it has embodied Islamic economic ideology, what impact has socialist ideology had on it, and how its socialist approach compares to those of Al Arqam s. This paper employs a theoretical approach in accordance with research in the realm of political economy. We find a general lack of ideological consistency in SI s economics and a poor ideological fit between its two ideologies. SI has neither been consistent with its Islamic nor its socialist ideology. We argue that the movement was a product of its socio-political environment, and it justified its actions based on the ideological best fit on an ex-post basis. In comparing SI to Al Arqam, we argue that a trade-off dilemma exists for movements who operate within a dominant system it inherently opposes where it must choose between maintaining its ideological integrity or the survival within the system. | en_US |
