Amirah Syazana Binti Masri; Abdul Rahman Mohd Yusoff (INCEIF, 2023)

Home affordability has been a very concerning issue in most countries around the world and Malaysia is not excluded. There are many factors contributing to the problems and the government has established various ways to mitigate them but there are still some hiccups in society. Hence, this paper aims to explore the alternatives effort available from Malaysian Islamic financial institutions such as Islamic banks, waqf institutions, and zakat institutions. Initially, the study defines home affordability and determines its issues in Malaysia and how important it is from the Shariah point of view. The author then discusses the roles of Islamic banks, waqf institutions, and zakat institutions toward home affordability in Malaysian society, their initiatives provided and the impacts on the society, the promotion of the institutions, and the growth of the Islamic finance industry as a whole through quantitative and qualitative research approaches from previous studies and interview sessions with respected institutions. The expected result of this paper is to create awareness in society toward the initiatives provided by these institutions, to promote the Islamic financial institutions efforts on home affordability, and at the same time to provide opportunities for future research to improve the existing initiatives adopted in Malaysia and globally.
