Structured products in Malaysia: issues and challenges
Abdul Aziz Bin A Rahman; Obiyathulla Ismath Bacha (INCEIF, 2022)

There are numerous variations and iterations of structured products, and these contracts have grown in popularity in recent years. The complexity of structured products (SP) continues to be a double-edged sword, as evidenced by the amount of devastation it caused during the 2007-2008 financial crisis. To avoid duplicating previous crises, client sophistication must be grown in tandem with the increasing complexity of structured products. The goal of this study is to provide more data on SP offerings in Malaysian banks. This includes identification of pay-out structure of SP in Malaysia. The study also aims to discover any flaws with SP product disclosure practises in Malaysia. The study compile data on payoff formulae used by banks that can be utilised as a reference in future research. The study also discovered a lack of complete disclosure of the disaggregated explicit and implicit costs in the product disclosure sheet.
